North Huntingdon Township is implementing a Signals in Coordination and Equipment Upgrades Project (SINC-UP). This is a periodic update to traffic equipment and signal timings in order to optimize traffic flow on major roadways. Signal timings are adjusted based on criteria such as traffic volumes, signal spacing, intersection geometry, and other necessary factors to maximize efficiency.
The current SINC-UP is primarily funded by federal grants resulting in significant travel benefits at a relatively low cost. Travel times are estimated to improve especially during peak hours. Additionally, equipment upgrades including emergency vehicle pre-emption, have been installed at several intersections.
Some of the traffic signal patterns along State Route 30 in North Huntingdon Township and Irwin Borough will change on Monday, July 9, 2018. The changes will revise the traffic signal timing at 24 intersections, including 6 intersections with traffic signal sequencing changes. Electronic message boards will be set in place, prior to the changes, to alert motorists of the pattern changes.
As recommended, “lagging left” signal phasing is being implemented at the intersections with signal sequencing changes. “Lagging left” signal phasing means the left turn traffic phase will turn green after the through movement rather than before the through movement. The result will be better synchronization of traffic flow on State Route 30.
